K-pop Is Not Just A Genre of Music

Nevaehona Williams

The genre known as K-pop has been making history for several years. K-pop’s origins say the genre started in 1992 on April 11th. When the trio Seo Taiji and Boys performed their hit “Nan Arayo (I Know)” on South Korea’s Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation. Since then, the K-pop genre has been evolving around the world. From country to country, world wide fans all around support K-pop.

From 2020 to 2021, new groups have come out. The girl groups include: Secret Number, Aespa, STAYC, Weeekly, woo!ah!, CRAXY, Cignature, LUNARSOLAR, REDSQUARE, BLACKSWAN, Maka Maka, Bling Bling, BOTOPASS, XUM, KEEMBO, Daydream, Episode, LABEL UP, 2NYNE, AREAL, PRISMA, PRECIOUS, Floria, and Asome.D. These are most of the groups that debuted in 2020 that you can see making a name for themselves in the K-pop world.

On to the boy groups. They include: Treasure, MCND, Enhypen, Cravity, TOO, DKB, H&D, B.O.Y, P1Harmony, WEi, DRIPPIN, GHOST9, BAE173, E’LAST, DUSTIN, UNVS, 2Z, XENEX, D.COY, MY.st, BECZ, Bandage, OFF THE CUFF, Trusty, ON AIR, and BXK. These are groups that debuted in 2020 and 2021. Right now, you can see them performing and making the latest hits in K-pop. A very special group named CHECKMATE consists of 3 boys and 2 girls. You may be wondering why this group is so special. Well, they are not more special than any other group, they are special because it’s a mix of male and females. Usually, in the K-pop world, you’re either solo, a girl group (only females), or a boy group (only males).

Fans of K-pop have been very uneasy about these new groups. They have questions like: Are they going to replace older groups? Will they even make it to the top? Will they create a good reputation for themselves? Questions like these give people motivation to show who they are as a group or as a solo artist.  I’m not saying these groups are going to fail or succeed, I’m saying the future always holds good and we’ll have to wait. K-pop gets misinterpreted so much that it’s starting to hurt the reputation of new groups. You before I let you go, I’m going to leave you with a quote by Bi Rain to think about; “No matter how hard people try to break you down or whoever tries to stomp on you. You will always have the same value. No one can change you.”
