Florida Same-Sex Silencing?

Florida Senate called a controversial “Don’t Say Gay”  law preventing schools to teach the history of the LGBTQIA+ community. This proposed law bans public school districts from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade suggesting “in a manner, that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for minors” and calling people of the LGBTQIA+ community “Pornographic.”

Advocates are warning that the passage could be harmful to children’s mental health.  Though LGBTQ+ advocates debate that this could be an unsafe learning environment for children who are part of the community to have family members in the LGBTQ+ community themselves. Children in these categories are already facing such discrimination and isolation. Florida’s openly gay state senate says, “To those who think you can legislate gay people away, I’m sorry. You cannot. I think you should legislate to protect them.”
